European Accreditation

In 2025, the Department of Veterinary Medicine obtained EAEVE accreditation, valid until 2030.

The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) brings together institutions responsible for veterinary education in Europe and beyond. Its mission is to evaluate, promote and further develop the quality and standards of Veterinary Education Establishments (VEEs) and their teaching.

EAEVE works to support the implementation of EU Directive 2005/36/EC, which establishes common minimum training requirements for veterinary surgeons and other regulated professions in Europe. EAEVE has also developed a Position Paper on Academic Autonomy and Independence in Veterinary Education.

Quality assurance, self-evaluation and accreditation of the Veterinary Medicine degree programme have been developed and implemented in accordance with the Italian AVA quality assurance system and the corresponding EAEVE process, the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT).

These processes are designed to promote the continuous improvement of the Department and its Veterinary Medicine degree programme, ensuring ongoing compliance with the evolving requirements of the ESEVT Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). 

Under the EAEVE evaluation system, Accreditation is granted to Veterinary Education Establishments that successfully meet the required standards following an evaluation carried out by an international team including academics, experts and a student.

EAEVE accreditation provides students and stakeholders, including companies, veterinary professionals and institutions, with assurance that they are engaging with a Department that meets internationally recognised standards and operates within a European and international framework.

The entire Department is actively involved in supporting its quality assurance processes, which require substantial organisational and management work. To coordinate these activities, the Department established a Permanent EAEVE Committee in 2012.

In addition to investing its own resources, the Department receives support from the University of Sassari and from one of its key regional stakeholders, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, to ensure that the organisational activities required for accreditation can be carried out effectively.

The Department of Veterinary Medicine is the beneficiary of €1,740,000 in funding from the Autonomous Region of Sardinia for an integrated development project aimed at bringing veterinary education in Sardinia into line with European Union standards and supporting the development of the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.  Integrated Development Project for the Accreditation of Veterinary Education in Sardinia in accordance with European Union Standards - Agreement No. 45 of 23 November 2023, CUP J83C2300010002, between the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the University of Sassari - Department of Veterinary Medicine.
